The Queen of Arabian Sea, Kochi is widely referred to as the commercial capital of Kerala. It is recognized as one of the seventeen major industrial cities of India by World Bank, Doing Business Group. The recent developments in the infrastructure and other facilities have helped Kochi get recognized as the new business city of India. Availability of cheap bandwidth through undersea cables and lower operational costs compared to other major cities in India has been to the advantage for IT and ITES related industries to grow in Kochi. The Government of Kerala has announced a project to build an industrial part "Electronic City" spanning an area of 340 acres. Dubai Internet City had already signed a MoU with the state government to set up a smart city at Kakkanad near Kochi. A number of other private investment proposals are also into consideration, especially in the IT sector. Infosys and Leela group are setting up campuses in Kochi and many other small and medium IT companies are also pipelined to start their units.
