Meet General Bikram Singh, the New Army Chief

Interestingly, Bikram Singh becomes the first chief who has not seen action in a conventional war. India has not fought any conventional type of war after 1971 war against Pakistan to liberate Bangladesh. During the Kargil conflict in 1999  Bikram Singh was posted as the Directorate General of Military Operations (DGMO) at Army Headquarters and used to conduct the daily media briefings. However General Singh has commanded a Rashtriya Rifles Sector in South Kashmir, an Infantry Division in Kashmir and the prestigious 15 Corps at Srinagar and as the Army Commander of Eastern Command.

The General had four important tenures at the Army Headquarters which included one additional tenure in the MO Directorate as the Deputy Director General, two tenures in the Perspective Planning Directorate, initially as the Deputy Director General of Perspective Planning (Strategy) and one as the head of the army's 'Think Tank' as the Additional Director General (the appointment now has since been upgraded to the post of Director General).

Beside these, there are many major military services in the name of our 25th General Bikram Singh in his four-decade career in the uniform so far. His tenure as Army Commander Eastern Command was also noticeable for its significant improvements in both the conventional and sub-conventional war-fighting arenas. The General Singh has also carried out international responsibility for United Nations in Central America and as the Deputy Force Commander and General-Officer- in Command (GOC) of Eastern Division in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
