Highlights of UPA-II's Achievments

5 crore post office accounts have been opened for MNREGA workers:

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act is a law in which employments are given to any adult within the 15 days from the date he applies. Anyone who applies gets local public work and if the government fails to provide this, unemployment allowance will be given to whoever has applied. This was a UPA brought job guarantee scheme, with the support of left parties in 2005.

MNREGA’s main objective is to protect rural households from poverty and hunger. The successful scheme has provided employment to 4.1 crore households in 2010-11. The UPA government sees the 5 crore post office accounts which have been opened for MNREGA workers as one of the key achievements in the second term.
