2. Hum Log

Hum Log was the first soap opera on Indian television, which became immensely popular ever since its inception.

Hum log is the first commercially sponsored show in the history of Indian television and its popularity influenced several other advertisers to sponsor television programs.

The serial became the hottest topic of discussion and Indians loved the show and the characters. The story revolved around an Indian middle-class family of the 1980s, their daily struggles and aspirations.

The serial which began telecasting on July 7, 1984 had an average viewership of 50 million per episode. Even in non-Hindi speaking regions, the popularity was so huge and the rating was between 20-40 percent, says Arvind Singhal and Evertt M Rogers in their research paper, reports Television Point. In the northern part of the country the rating was between 60 and 90 per cent.

It is been more than 25 years since the telecasting of the serial stopped, but even now actors who played the characters continue to be called by these names.
