3. Garibi Hatao (Eradicate Poverty):

‘Garibi Hatao’ which means ‘Eradicate Poverty’ was the theme and slogan of Indira Gandhi's 1971 election campaign. It became a powerful tool that was aimed to give Indira Gandhi an independent national support, based on rural and urban poor. Though the programs created through the campaign carried out locally, it were funded, developed, and supervised by New Delhi and the Congress Party. This allowed her to attract votes from both the rural and urban class population. Garibi Hatao became the iconic motto of the Indian National Congress and it made her the greatest mass leader of the last century. After the campaigning, she returned in Parliament with 352 seats which was a marked improvement from the party’s poor show of 283 in the previous polls.
