Karnataka Introducing Favorable Public Procurement Policy to Aid Startups
Karnataka is planning to implement a preferential public procurement policy to offer increased assistance to startups, as announced by Priyank Kharge, the state's IT-BT minister. During his address at the 'Big Tech Show 2023', hosted by the Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM) in Mysuru, Kharge disclosed the government's intention to create a policy that would extend government backing to startups with distinctive intellectual property registered through the startup cell.
Under this policy, the Karnataka government would be the primary customer, streamlining the purchase of products and services that possess distinctive intellectual property. This support would be particularly beneficial for startups involved in initiatives extending beyond Bengaluru. Kharge also emphasized Karnataka's significant role in the tech sector, noting, "Karnataka hosts one-third of India's tech professionals. Currently, we are fostering 25,000 startups within our ecosystem, with 15,000 of them receiving support from the Karnataka government".
Additionally, he announced the creation of a Skill Advisory Council focusing on emerging technologies, the establishment of specialized Centers of Excellence in various sectors, and the state's initiatives to forge a Global Innovation Alliance involving nearly 50 nations. This alliance's objective is to enable networking, market entry, and partnerships for startups, as well as develop dedicated economic hubs and international competency centers that would support a variety of ecosystems.
