ICC Men's T20 WC'24: South Africa Triumphs Over West Indies, Enters Semifinals
South Africa secured a semifinal spot in the T20 World Cup after defeating the host team, West Indies, by three wickets using the DLS method in their Super Eight match at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. With this victory, South Africa remains unbeaten in their seven matches of the tournament and joins defending champions England in the semifinals.
Proteas captain Aiden Markram won the toss and chose to bowl first in overcast conditions. His decision paid off as his bowlers limited the West Indies to 135/8 in 20 overs. The hosts had a poor start, losing opener Shai Hope (0) and Nicholas Pooran (1) early. However, Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase mounted a recovery with an 81-run partnership off 65 balls for the third wicket. The stand was broken by Tabraiz Shamsi, who dismissed Mayers (35) in the 12th over.
In the next over, captain Rovman Powell (1) was dismissed by Keshav Maharaj, leaving the West Indies struggling at 89/4 in 12.4 overs. Shamsi then denied Sherfane Rutherford the chance to settle, taking his wicket for a duck in the 14th over. Roston Chase, who had been holding firm, also fell to Shamsi in the 16th over after scoring 52 off 42 balls, which included three fours and two sixes. Andre Russell managed to hit two sixes but was run out in the 18th over. In the same over, Kagiso Rabada took a catch off his own bowling to dismiss Akeal Hosein (6).
West Indies finished for 135/8 in 20 overs as Shamsi returned with the figures of 3-27. In response, South Africa was given a 123 target in 17 overs via DLS method after rain interrupted the match. South Africa suffered early hiccups with the wickets of Reeza Hendricks (0) and Quinton de Kock (12) in Andre Russell's second over. Captain Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs stitched a brief 27-run partnership to stabilize the side in the powerplay before Alzarri Joseph got hold of the former in the sixth over.
Markram was out after scoring 18 runs from 15 balls. Heinrich Klaasen joined Stubbs in the middle, and together they put together a 35-run partnership off just 16 balls before Joseph claimed his second wicket. Stubbs continued his innings alongside David Miller until Roston Chase dismissed him in the 12th over after a stay of 14 balls.
In the 14th over, Chase claimed the important wicket of Stubbs (29), putting South Africa under pressure. However, Marco Jansen remained unbeaten on 21 runs from 14 balls, including a six and a four, guiding them to victory with five balls remaining. Chase took three wickets for the West Indies, while Russell and Joseph each grabbed two dismissals.
