India Leads Asia-Pacific in Data Center Capacity, Surpasses Australia, Japan, and Hong Kong
India has cemented its position as a data center powerhouse, outpacing key Asia-Pacific contenders like Australia, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Singapore, and Korea, boasting a commanding capacity of 950 MW, excluding China. According to a recent private report unveiled by real estate consultancy CBRE, India is poised to further solidify its lead by anticipating a staggering addition of 850 MW during the span of 2024-2026.
The report underscores India's burgeoning data center sector as a prime investment avenue, citing its resilience and potential for lucrative returns. Notably, the sector has garnered significant attention from both global and domestic investors, with investment commitments exceeding a staggering USD 40 billion between 2018 and 2023.
In 2023 alone, the sector witnessed a notable surge with the addition of 255 MW of new supply, a substantial leap from the 200 MW recorded in 2022. This growth trajectory is set to persist in 2024, with plans underway to introduce over 330 MW across various cities. Such expansion initiatives are anticipated to bolster the total stock by approximately 30 per cent annually, propelling it to around 1,370 MW by year-end.
