India, Japan Collaborate for Safe and Trustworthy AI Development: Hiroshi Yoshida
In a significant move towards harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) while ensuring its safe and ethical use, India and Japan have committed to working together to foster secure and trustworthy AI development. This collaboration was announced by Hiroshi Yoshida, Japan's Vice-Minister for Policy Coordination (Internal Affairs), during the ‘Global IndiaAI Mission 2024’ summit in New Delhi.
Recognizing India's growing influence and expertise in AI, Yoshida expressed Japan’s enthusiasm about partnering with India, one of the first countries to announce its participation in global AI initiatives. “We believe India and Japan, alongside other global partners, are united in striving for safe, secure, and trustworthy AI worldwide”, Yoshida stated.
The summit, hosted by India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), gathers global leaders and AI researchers from over 50 countries to discuss AI's future. The focus is on ethical, inclusive, and responsible AI development, with a strong emphasis on mitigating associated risks such as misinformation and intellectual property issues.
Yoshida highlighted the synergies between India's AI initiatives and the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI). He underscored Japan's advocacy for a safety code and guidelines to address AI-related risks, reflecting the shared commitment to developing AI that benefits society without compromising safety and ethical standards.
“Through our collaboration, Japan and India aim to contribute significantly to the responsible development, deployment, and global use of AI”, Yoshida noted, reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two nations.
