India’s Big Win this Year Shines a Spotlight at the Grammys

India’s big win at the Grammys this year shines a spotlight on both, the established and the emerging talent of the growing diaspora community. While there is still a long path to tread when it comes to the representation of South Asian talent on international platforms, the acknowledgement of artists like Kej and Shah shows that we are on the right track. Kej bagged his first Grammy at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards in 2015 for Winds of Samsara, a collaboration with South African flautist Wouter Kellerman. On winning his second Grammy for the Best New Age Album for Divine Tides, the 40-year-old took to Instagram to share a token of his gratitude for The Academy, his team, his listeners and, most importantly, rock legend Stewart Copeland, who provided varied drum arrangements on the nine-track album.

Singer-songwriter Falguni Shah was equally ecstatic about her maiden Grammy victory in the Best Children’s Album category for A Colorful World, which was born out of her struggles to explain racial equity to her brown child, who studies with kids from varying ethnicities. The singer, known for her "modern inventive style with a formidable Indian classically-shaped vocal talent", was previously nominated for a Grammy in the same category for her 2018 album "Falu's Bazaar".
