Most Influential Women in Finance


Kalpana Morparia: Morparia is the Chief Executive Officer of Indian Operations at J. P. Morgan Asia Pacific and the Director at ICICI Home Finance. She was Joint Managing Director of ICICI Bank Ltd. since 2006, was also the in charge of ICICI Bank’s Corporate Centre. On recalling her life after 33 years in ICICI she says, “ICICI Bank was like a surname. I could never complete an introduction without saying 'Kalpana Morparia from ICICI',", as quoted to Rediff.

When asked for a tip for work-life balance by BusinessToday, she says, “For me work is life”. She feels a workplace without women is not only dull but also ineffective. She made her name into the list of “The 50 Most Powerful Women in International Business” by Fortune Magazine in 2008 and in “25 Most Powerful Women in India Business” by the Business Today from 2004-2008. In 2006 she was also named one of “The 100 Most Powerful Women” by the Forbes Magazine. She says being a powerful woman is important because ‘It gives you the ability to make a difference’.

Naina Lal Kidwai: Kidwai is the Group General Manager and Country Head of the HSBC Group India. This Economy graduate from Lady Shri Ram College was the first Indian woman who earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. The tag of ‘First Woman’ does not end here. She was the first woman to be hired by PriceWaterhouse in India and also the same to lead a foreign bank in India. Kidwai says she had to work very hard to make her space among the men. She says, "When I embarked on this journey, I didn't think women would be where we are today. It is very gratifying”, as quoted by Business Today.

She worked as a Head of ANZ Grindlays, which is an Investment Bank. Later she joined Morgan Stanley as Vice Chairman from 1994-2002. She held the positions of Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Deputy CEO, Managing Director of HSBC Securities and Capital Markets India. In 2009 she became the Head of HSBC.

Kidwai was ranked 12th in the Wall Street Journal Global Listing of Women to Watch in 2006. She made her name in the 15 Global Influentials listed by Time Magazine in 2002. She earned “Padma Shri” for her work in the promotion Trade and Industry. On being questioned – what is the biggest advantage of being a most powerful woman? She replies, “The warmth and friendship of some of the most capable people on the planet.
