'Mumbai terror strikes meant to hit Indian economy'
By    IANS
Friday,28 November 2008, 15:25 hrs IST
New York: The Indo-American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston (IACCGH) Friday said the terrorist strike on Mumbai, India's financial capital, is an attack on the country's economy.

Condemning the attacks, the chamber said in a statement: "The attacks in Mumbai were a direct attack on the economic capital of the largest democracy in the world and the focus on US visitors was the terrorists' attack on the oldest democracy in the world."

The chamber represents Indian and American businesses in Houston, the energy capital of the world, and its surrounding areas. In April, the chamber had taken a trade delegation to Mumbai.

"We will work even harder to increase bilateral trade with Mumbai," said Jagdip Ahluwalia, executive director of IACCGH.

At least 125 people were killed and over 327 injured as terrorists struck 10 Mumbai landmarks, including two five star hotels, Wednesday night.

Calling Mumbai a resilient city, Ahluwalia said: "Once the wounds are healed, citizens will rally around and work even harder to thwart the terrorists' attempts to destabilize the economic capital of India."

The chamber is organising its flagship event, the fifth Indo-US Economic Summit: Looking Ahead - Consolidating Alliances, in January next year at New Delhi.
