Bangalore: If a general election was to be held now, the Congress will get around 110 seats, and the non-UPA, non-NDA parties will have an edge, suggests India Today Poll: Mood of the Nation 2012. It is seen that Congress, which has 206 seats in the Lok Sabha, will manage just 110 seats while BJP may improve its tally to 140 seats from 116 in 2009. The survey also suggests that non-UPA and non-NDA parties will get 180 to 190 seats.

A surprising finding from the survey suggests that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is the "popular choice" for the post of Prime Minister. He even beats Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, who was the most preferred in 2011. Nearly 24 percent respondents favored Modi as PM and 17 percent suggested Rahul for the top post. BJP veteran L.K. Advani was third with 10 percent votes along with Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi. Nitish Kumar was on the fourth position with 5 percent votes while Mayawati and Sushma Swaraj shared the fifth position with 4 percent votes each.

Other interesting findings from the survey suggest that 37 percent of respondents think PM Manmohan Singh is directly responsible for the price rise. While 24 percent holds Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee responsible for the price spiral and 16 percent blamed it on Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar.
