India's IT Policy 2011 Assures 28 Million New Jobs

Bangalore: Kapil Sibal, Communications and IT Minister, unveiled a draft national policy on information technology (IT) on Friday. The policy assures to boost India's position as a global IT hub and bring it into play as an engine for speedy, comprehensive and rational growth of the national economy. The policy targets at making at least one person in every household literate within 10 years. The Minister further said the most important objective of the policy is to supplement post-graduate education and produce about 2,500 PhDs annually by 2020 and further added, "For this, we need tie-ups with universities and educational institutions like IITs and IIScs to promote such kind of thing."

The draft policy affirms to encourage IT industry in Tier II and Tier III cities and generate a pool of 10 million added skilled IT workers by 2020. Going by the current number, the IT sector employs over 2.5 million skilled people. It has been the chief employment generator over the last two decades. The policy also asserts to promote growth of local demands and market, as well as promoting further capture of the global market. The draft national policy released by Sibal four days ago, anticipates on creating of 28 million jobs by 2020. It's an effort to thwart the country from becoming over dependant on imports for meeting the growing domestic need in the field of electronics.
