Indian Student Traffic to U.S. Declining
Bangalore: The number of Indian students for higher education has decreased by 1 percent to a total of 104,000 in the United States for the first time in many years and the number of Chinese students has increased. But the surprising fact is that for the first time, the number of U.S. students in India has jumped by over 44 percent, according to Open Doors annual survey conducted by U.S. International Institute of Education, reports Times of India. There are around three thousand eight hundred and eighty four U.S. students in India. Though there is 44 percent increase of U.S students in India, China remains the top favorite with 13,910 U.S. students and the percentage of them in China has risen to 2 percent from last year. India has risen up to 14th spot from the 21st spot which was the year before, as a destination for U.S. students studying overseas. Even though there is a decline of Indian students in U.S, they are the second largest overseas students and they represent 14 percent of all the international students in U.S. higher education and also the nation is the favorite destination for Indian students overseas. According to the survey, the number of international students at the colleges and universities in the United States has increased by five percent to 723,277 during the 2010-11 academic year. The open doors annual survey, also mentioned that the college campuses that had reported increase in the international students intake in the U.S. also recorded more foreign government sponsorships. Indian students are overwhelming private citizens and they depend on funding from scholarship and teaching assistantships. Many of these have dried up after the recession and this it may have had an effect on the student flow to the U.S.
