Bangalore:  India and Latin America are the priority markets for Russia's Glonass satellite navigation system, similar to the U.S' Global Positioning System, a top Russian official said.

Glonass -- or the Global Navigation Satellite System -- is operated for the Russian government by the Russian Space Forces, the military wing responsible for space operations. It is designed for both military and civilian uses.

"Priority markets are Latin America and India," said Russian Space Systems deputy general director Grigory Stupak. A group of 31 Glonass satellites are currently in orbit with 24 needed to provide global coverage. Three reserve satellites were launched in November after three original satellites were destroyed in a failed launch last year.
