Encephalitis Killer of Uttar Pradesh's Children
Bangalore: Uttar Pradesh government has released Rs 18 crore for 100 bed ward for encephalitis patients in Gorakhpur after CNN-IBN exposed on encephalitis in that region. The government also sanctioned 3000 deep borewells in the area. The deadly encephalitis which is a water or mosquito borne viral disease has been regularly striking in the eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh and over 500 hundred children have died due to it in the last two months. More than 50, 000 people have died from the past three decades as the public system has collapsed in the region, which is one of the poorest places in India. Public health experts and activists say that this plague has been badly mismanaged from the last 33 years and there is no national program to contain the epidemic in one of India's poorest regions the responses for this crisis by the government and the media is very shocking and lethargic. In many hospitals in the Gorakhpur city, the paediatric wards have been not able to handle these many encephalitis victims. Digvijaya Singh, Congress General Secretary has told that more needs are to be done for this situation because of the living conditions in that area. He also told that everyone needs to be more sensitive to this situation. He said that the Government of India is taking adequate precautions, but at the same time the state government should also realize the seriousness of the issue and star acting according to it.
