Bangalore: Elections are the biggest source of corruption in the country, says none other than the Chief Election Commissioner of India, S.Y. Quraishi who urged the voters, especially in the urban belt, to use their voting rights to choose the better ones.

Quraishi says polls have turned out to be the greatest sources of corruption because a candidate spending 5 crore to 10 crore for getting elected obviously looks forward in gaining what he has spent. So, the first thing after being elected is to reach out to the officials and get to know how they can help him in recovering his expenditure at the earliest.

Talking at a special meeting for the media to ask their assistance to boost voter awareness, he said the commission is pondering over the possibility of instituting a national award for the best media campaign that promotes voter awareness and motivates increased participation in elections. A jury would be formed consisting of prominent personalities from judiciary and media would select the media institution that features the best campaign. Quraishi appealed for greater media involvement in the process so that people participation in elections goes up.
