Bangalore: Are coaching classes or the IIT brand itself responsible for the declining quality of students at IIT? There's more to credit for this. The quality of IIT students has certainly been declining for several years now. Given the fact that IITs are technical institutes, the quality of students should define its standard of the institution. Though students are extremely brilliant, their quality as engineers is unquestionably going down. The main reason cited responsible for the present situation is defective coaching classes, which play a major role in a student's doorway to the IIT system, feels Gautam Barua, Director IIT Guwahati, reports the Business Standard. Students are already suffering from mental exhaustion when they step in an IIT, and many are on the verge on loosing the potential to perform.

"Spoon feeding", which stands as a synonym to coaching classes, is the chief factor that pushes students to adapt the institute's way of teaching. Emphasizing more on extra reading, screening creativity, explanations and logic to solve problems, makes students lenient and they do not work hard as they are expected. Therefore, their learning regarding the subject is not up to the mark when compared to earlier students. S Prasad, Former Director, IIT-Delhi rubbishes the allegation that the whole student community is not up to the mark and says it hardly does justice to the excellent students in these institutions. He feels that the admission process has a lot to do with the situation. Students are already suffering from serious coaching hangover, feels Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras. He felt that there is an edge to what a tool like an entrance exam can do. Considering school scores it should allow them to get well-rounded students.
