Apple Has Only 1 Store Per 216 Million Chinese!

Bangalore: Apple is earning one fifth of its revenue from China, still if a Chinese customer want to buy an iPhone or iPad, he will have to wait in a never ending queue since Apple proportionately has a single store per 216 million people.

Apple’s has eight retail stores in Pennsylvania, a state with 12.7 million population whereas the 1.3 billion populated China has got only six outlets, reports Reuters. The tech giants expansion plans in China has fallen well short of its goals.

Earlier in 2010, Ron Johnson, then- Apple’s retail head had revealed its plans on expanding the number of retail shops to 25. According to him the company was taking its time to ensure the correct locations for its stores. But two years after, China still has only six stores and all of them are completely packed in all working days. Even for repairing the iPhones, the customers were required to stand in long queues and the front lines for getting Apple’s new releases were always taken by scalpers, who resell the products for big profits.

"There's certainly more demand than Apple can serve with their store footprint currently," said Torsten Stocker, a partner at business strategist Monitor Group.

According to the report, the trend has set rise to some Apple copy-cat stores in China, which don’t have the original Apple products. Apple now has two retail stores in Beijing, three in Shanghai, and one in Hong Kong.

Earlier, Apple had settled a lawsuit paying $60 million to remove ban from selling its latest version of iPad in China.
