Entrepreneurial lessons from the Dhobi Ghat

Bangalore: It may look cheap and dirty to watch those dhobi’s sweating their skin out to color and polish our fabrics. But these people are really worth to be worshipped as entrepreneurs, the nature of their work may really not influence anybody rather we’d wish, it not to influence us but a coin always has two sides. Their management and entrepreneurial lessons are from mere experiences.

Collecting clothes from households, hospitals, hotels and bleaching them isn’t an easy job. Their work requires patience, contacts, influence, organized behavior and timeliness. Dhobi’s work individually or they work in a group reporting to a boss. It is no different from any work style except they have ‘soapy hands and wet foot.’

Dhobi Ghat

The washers or the dhobi’s collect their work from various hospitals, hotels and houses and collectively they meet at a place called ‘Dhobi Ghat’ where they perform their work of washing, bleaching, starching and even ironing the cloth to its finest manner. It can rather be called as an office set up and they perform their activities without hindering the activities of others. The most famous Dhobi Ghat is located next to Mahalaxmi railway station in Mumbai. Dhobi’s are found all over India and each person carries his own style of work which builds competition, thus an entire formal business style is created in the Dhobi Ghat. We should in fact be proud to learn few amazing entrepreneurial lessons from these men whom we really don’t call entrepreneurs because of the genre of their work.
