Is Delhi India's Rape Capital?

Bangalore: Education level has been growing, the cities and towns are developing but still the numbers of rape cases don’t show any tendency to decrease. It is really a national shame that the capital city Delhi itself remains to be in the top in the number of rape cases reported.

All agree with the fact that rape is a brutal act of violence which is barbaric and criminal. Delhi has been on the top of the list in the number of rape cases for many years now. 414 rape cases were reported in 2010 and have increased to 568 in 2011. The major city of India, Mumbai has also been in the second place consecutively. Mumbai has registered 218 cases in 2011 which was 194 in 2010. National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics of 2011 shows this growing evil in our society.

From 2007 t0 2011 Delhi has been in the top of the chart which is followed by Mumbai, Bhopal, Pune and Jaipur.  When it come to the states’ list Madhya Pradesh tops the list with 15,275 rape cases. Bengal has reported 11,427 rape cases and comes second in the list. These states were in the same top two position even in the 2010 list.

Utter Pradesh came third in the chart with 8,834 while Assam reported 8,060 rape cases. When UP which was fourth in the list in 2010 came up to third in 2011, Assam has gone one place down. Maharashtra which had 7,703 rape cases reported in 2011 has been in the fifth position consecutively.

As per the report, around 75,257 accused aged from 18 to 30 were arrested all across India in the 2007 to 2011 period. 38,845 rape case convicts fall in to the age group 30 t0 45. Over 9000 aged above 45 were also arrested in the rape cases. Shockingly, 4,461 juveniles aged below 18 were also arrested in rape cases. It is also reported that the accused are known to victims in most rape cases.
