Disney's Touche Technology Turns You into a Touchscreen

Bangalore: Disney is known to create magic on screen. They have now extended their magic making abilities to your daily life as well.  Disney design in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University have conceptualized a new swept frequency capacity sensing technology which can turn simple objects into touch interface which are gesture sensitive too.

Munehiko Sato, Ivan Poupyrev, and Chris Harrison Disney researchers came up this concept drawing inspiration from Mark Weiser’s 1991 ‘disappearing computer’ technology. The trio has recently won Best Paper at the 2012 ACM SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems.

In a short video released by Disney, details of the practical usage of the technology were demonstrated. Interestingly touché can turn your own body into a touch interface. A ‘shh’ gesture with your index figure on your lips can put your phone into silent mode. Similarly your hand gestures can forward your playlist or open your contacts.

Other interesting abilities of touché include fluid sensitivity. A bowl of cereal can become a sensor and alarm you if your naughty five year old puts his finger in the bowl. Similarly your couch can sense your presence and turn on your television. It will also be enabled to sense if you fall asleep in front of the television and then turn it off.

Touché is still in the concept stage and will take some time to turn into a reality. But when it does, touch screen phones will become a thing of the past.
