Festive Season Bonuses Still Relevant?

Festive Season Bonuses Still Relevant?
Bangalore: It's that time of the year when many employees are eagerly awaiting a Diwali bonus from their companies. Earlier the concept of Diwali bonus was very prevalent in the old traditional companies like manufacturing and consumer goods especially the blue-collar workers. But now the times have changed as companies have veered away from the concept of offering Diwali bonuses especially for the managers. It has been noticed that over the period of years, the nature of managerial compensation has changed. A lot of productivity and performance-linked incentives have come in, which were almost non-existent earlier. According to labour laws in our country, the companies have to pay an annual bonus to all employees whose basic pay is 10,000 rupees per month or less. The range of the bonus differs from 8.33percent to 20 percent of the employee's basic salary. A standard Diwali bonus which is given every year becomes something that employees take for granted and provides them no incentive to improve their work performance. Many employees feel that this annual bonus add to the employees festive spirit and increases their cash flow. On the other hand there are certain companies that came up with a new concept of bonus and titled it as 'performance-based bonuses', that is offered only to the management staff. This kind of bonus motivates the employees. Now companies prefer to give gifts or organize office parties during Diwali rather than bonus. The government should also consider offering Bonus during festival times, to the employees based on their performance. This will not only motivate the employees but will in turn benefit the citizens of our country.
